Become a PADI Open Water Diver! - Learn to Scuba Dive

The PADI Open Water Diver course is the world’s most popular scuba course, and has introduced millions of people to the adventurous diving lifestyle.

The PADI Open Water Diver course consists of three main phases:

  • Knowledge Development (Online, or in a classroom ) to understand basic principles of scuba diving
  • Confined Water Dives to learn the required scuba skills
  • Open Water Dives to review your skills and explore!

Knowledge Development

Learn the lingo. During the first phase of your PADI Open Water Diver scuba certification, you develop an understanding of the basic principles of scuba diving. You learn things like how pressure affects your body, how to choose the right scuba gear and what to consider when planning dives.
You review what you have studied in five knowledge sections with your instructor and take a short quiz to be sure you’re getting it. At the end of the course, you’ll take a longer quiz that makes sure you have all the key concepts and ideas down. You and your instructor will review anything that you don’t quite get until it’s clear.

Confined Water Dives

This is what it’s all about – diving. You develop the required scuba skills by scuba diving in a pool. Here you’ll learn everything from setting up your scuba gear to how to easily get water out of your scuba mask without surfacing. You’ll also practice some emergency skills, like sharing air or replacing your scuba mask. Plus, you may play some games, make new friends and have a great time.

There are five confined water dives, with each building upon the previous. Over the course of these five dives, you learn all the skills you need to dive in open water.

Open Water Dives

After your confined water dives, you and the new friends you’ve made, continue the learning experience during four open water dives with your PADI Instructor at a local dive site. We use a variety of places along the south coast, including the picturesque Swanage Pier, the coral gardens of Kimmeridge, or in the depths off Chesil Beach. Or off our own dive boat the DSV Vixen. This is where you fully experience the underwater adventure – at the beginner level, of course.

The open water section may be referred to another more exotic resort if required, (this is called a referral) which is ideal if you are going on holiday and you only want to dive in the warmer waters.

What do I get?

Unless you choose PADI eLearning, you’ll get the following training materials during the PADI Open Water Diver course:

  • The PADI Open Water Diver Manual
  • PADI Open Water Diver DVD
  • Recreational Dive Planner (Table or eRDPML).
  • You will also get your PADI Log book

How do I do It?

To enroll in the PADI Open Diver course or Junior Open Water Diver course, you must

  • Be 10 years or older! (PADI eLearning requires a minimum age of 13 years due to international internet laws)

  • Students younger than 15 years, who successfully complete the course qualify for the PADI Junior Open Water Diver certification, which may be upgraded to a PADI Open Water Diver certification upon reaching 15.

Physical: For safety, all students complete a brief scuba medical questionnaire that asks about medical conditions that could be a problem while diving. If none of these apply, you sign the form and you’re ready to start. If any of these apply to you, as a safety precaution your Doctor must assess the condition as it relates to diving and sign a medical form that confirms that you’re fit to dive.

Waterskills: Before completing the PADI Open Water Diver course, you will have to demonstrate basic waterskill comfort by:

  • swimming 200 metres. (There is no time limit for this, and you may use any swimming strokes you want.)
  • float and tread water for 10 minutes. (Again using any methods that you want.)

About Physical Challenges: Any individual who can meet the performance requirements of the course qualifies for certification! There are many adaptive techniques that allow individuals with physical challenges to meet these requirements. Individuals with paraplegia, amputations and other challenges commonly earn the PADI Open Water Diver certification. Even individuals with more significant physical challenges participate in diving. Give us a call for more information.

What's Next?

Now you have the most recognised diving qualification in the world, you can go anywhere and do anything! (Well almost!!) Most people opt for the Advanced Open Water completing 5 Adventure Dives. many people also choose to do a speciality or two, to hone the new found skills and perfect them. Such as Peak Performance Buoyancy, or Underwater Navigator. Or alternatively did you see some fish down on your dive? - want to know more about the underwater wildlife? - then Project Aware Fish ID is the choice for you!! Either way, you now have the qualification, don't shove it in your wallet and forget about it! - COME DIVING!!

TAL scuba was an excellent place to do our Open Water PADI qualification
‘TAL scuba was an excellent place to do our Open Water PADI qualification. It was really fun and I felt safe at all times. Karen and Mike were excellent Instructors. We enjoyed it so much we signed up to PADI Dry Suit and the Advanced course straight away. I have already recommended TAL to many people and I am so excited about our first dive holiday to the Red Sea next year!’

I passed my PADI open water! TAL is a great school to learn and achieve success!
★★★★★ 2 days ago I passed my PADI open water! TAL is a great school to learn and achieve success!

Diving was recommended to me as one of those life affirming challenges as I am not that adventurous. Experiencing the try dive, gave me the amazing opportunity to be underwater and I knew I wanted to learn more. It is fair to say that the learning process didn’t come easily for me and TAL allowed me to learn at my own pace.

The friendly TAL Diving Team have the patience, knowledge and ability to change the most challenging students, in to qualified divers. In addition to the school, the advice that you receive from Karen, when buying kit and equipment is second to none, she can be very clear on what you don’t need!

My experience of TAL is that they are committed to ensure that they give you the best instruction and service, focusing on you as an individual.

Thank you for enabling me to achieve my goal.

Fantastic experience, start to finish.
Having just completed my open water course I cannot thank Karen, Trevor and everyone at TAL enough. What a fantastic experience. I felt extremely well looked after and supported throughout, in the classroom, in the pool and in the sea. Karen, you had every patience with me and have a great teaching style. Very encouraging for me to work on the aspects of my diving that I wasn't keen on and now feel much more confident. I cannot wait to book my advanced open water with you (which will be very soon!).

Open Water - My first introduction to Scuba and TAL Scuba Dorset
Open Water - My first introduction to Scuba and TAL as a company. In a word Excellent! Friendly, professional welcome to the dive centre by John and Jill and they lead our small group of 4 putting us all at ease and were able to confidently answer any questions we had. The facilities provided were clean and more than adequate and the sites chosen for the 'open water' parts of the course were great to. I also took up the option to complete my Dry Suit Speciality at the same time and again this went, all my questions were answered and I felt I was in confident hands at all times.

General comment' - Tal Scuba was recommended to me by a work colleague and I would gladly continue to recommend them to my friends and family. They have exceeded all my expectations so far and i'm sure that will continue in the future. I plan to partake in many more courses with them and even look forward to joining them on some of their foreign diving excursions. Thanks Guys :0) Review by Dave :0) / (Posted on 27/02/2012)
'The tragedy of life doesn't lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goal to reach' - Bejamin Mays
Well as a non swimmer and a confirmed landlubber, I thought this may be a challenge too far!

But with help and patience of the team at TAL, I qualified late last year as a PADI Open Water diver.....(thanks Jon).

For me it's been a truely amazing experience, and I've made some great friends along the way. This year I plan on joining the team at TAL on one of their many overseas diving trips - and I'm definately hooked!

For anyone looking for a fresh challenge, I cannot recommend it enough. Give Karen or Trevor a call, and try something completely different.
