Puerto Galera is a municipality in Oriental Mindoro province of Philippines. It has an unending streak of protected coves with beautiful coral gardens and scores of exotic species. The city has a rich history, during which it was a major port where Chinese traders ended up bartering Ming Vases for gold. It was founded in 1572 by Spanish and was the first Spanish settlement in Philippines. It was also the first capital of Mindoro province. The trading history of this city shows that Chinese Malay and Indonesian traders were indulged in trade with locals as early as 10th century. Mindoro and Luzon islands are separated by Verde Passage which has strong currents of up to 6 knots which makes it an ideal location for drift diving. The marine flora and fauna is worth a dive. Puerto Galera has seen a recent surge in popularity among tourists. It was awarded the title of ‘The Most Beautiful Bay in the World’ by UNESCO in 2005. It was only the third bay from southeast Asia to get that award at the time. Puerto Galera is an amazing diving destination. It is one of the best reef diving site and is located at the very heart of the ‘Coral Triangle’. Atlantis is one of the best resorts in the Philippines and it is located in Puerto Galera.
